	Rollerball pens - sometimes known as 'inky' pens - were initially designed to combine the convenience of a ballpoint pen with the smooth "wet ink" effect of a fountain pen. Instead of oil-based, viscous inks, they adapt the ballpoint writing mechanism for use with water-based liquid or gel ink. Gel ink usually drives more rapidly, making it more resistent to smudging. Rollerballs are popular with people who prefer a pen which requires less pressure to be applied to the paper than a ballpen, but with stronger and brighter ink finish.
